AEW Dynamite Preview for January 22, 2020
AEW Dynamite comes from Chris Jericho’s Rock N Wrestling Rager At Sea this week. This week’s show is pretty stacked with an AEW World Tag Team Championship match, an AEW World Championship number one contender’s match, and The Inner Circle taking on the Jurassic Express. The show will also feature MJF vs. Joey Janela and Priscilla Kelly making her AEW singles debut against Dr. Britt Baker.
There have been multiple reports on how this will be taped, but it seems matches will either be coming from the cruise ship itself and/or from their stop in the Bahamas possible.
The show will not air live so be careful on social media on the day of the show.
What happened last week:
- Kenny Omega & Hangman Adam Page defeated the Best Friends, Santana & Ortiz, and the Young Bucks when Adam Page pinned Chuck Taylor after a combination V-Trigger/Buckshot Lariat to become #1 contenders to the World Tag Team Championship.
- Cody accepted MJF’s challenge for Dynamite and all of the stipulations included with it.
- Kris Statlander and Hikaru Shida defeated Brandi Rhodes and Mel when Statlander pinned Mel with the Big Bang Theory.
- Jon Moxley defeated Sammy Guevera by submission. After the match, the Inner Circle attacked Moxley and Chris Jericho stabbed him in the eye with a spike.
- MJF, the Butcher, and the Blade defeated Dustin Rhodes, QT Marshall, and Diamond Dallas Page when MJF rolled up QT Marshall.
- PAC defeated Darby Allin with a Black Arrow. PAC will face Jon Moxley to earn the next title shot at Chris Jericho.
Announced for this week:
This is a bit confusing as last week on AEW Dynamite, Joey Janela did a promo about a match “next week” against Rey Fenix. It turned out that match was actually for AEW Dark and on Dynamite he will be facing MJF.
This is only MJF’s third one-on-one match in AEW history as he has wins against Brandon Cutler and Adam Page, the latter being in the Diamond Dozen finals. While Janela has won his last two matches on AEW Dark.
This will be Priscilla Kelly’s singles debut in AEW. She took part in the Casino Battle Royale at AEW All Out and has been wrestling in RISE, SHIMMER, Bar Wrestling, F1RST Wrestling and other promotions since.
Britt Baker has lost three out of her past four matches with all the losses being against ranked opponents. She has had a change in attitude recently and this will be her first time in action since snapping on Riho after the four-way women’s title match in Jacksonville.
This is a continuation of the story between Jungle Boy and Chris Jericho. The two wrestled in a ten-minute time limit match on December 18th where Jungle Boy took Jericho to a time-limit finish. Since that night, the Jurassic Express as a unit has won their last two matches.
This is Jericho’s first time in AEW action since that match while Santana and Ortiz wrestled last week in the four-way number one contender’s match. They lost, but did not take part in the pin. Jericho teamed with Ortiz & Santana on the first episode of AEW Dynamite where they defeated the Elite.
SCU won the World Tag Team Championship in the tournament to crown the first champions and have been successful in three title defenses since defeating the Young Bucks, Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevera, and winning a three-way at Full Gear over Private Party and the Lucha Brothers. This will be their first title defense since December 18th.
Adam Page and Kenny Omega have a 4-2 record as a tag team and have won their last two matches straight including last week’s four-way match over the Young Bucks, Best Friends, and Santana & Ortiz. The two have struggled to get along at times with Adam Page having issues with his former Elite stablemates, but they have really put it together of late with the V-Trigger/Buckshot Lariat combo becoming a devastating finisher.
This match was made after both wrestlers got wins last week. The two will face off here with the winner becoming the top contender to Chris Jericho’s AEW World Championship.
Jon Moxley has yet to lose a singles match and his one loss is a match on Dynamite #3 where he was teamed with PAC and walked out on him. That lead to a match on Dynamite #4 between the two that ended in a time limit draw. Moxley might be in an eye patch here thanks to last week’s attack, but his voice should be fine.
While PAC has two losses on his record, he holds wins against both of the wrestlers who have defeated him. He beat Kenny Omega and then lost to him, and now desperately wants a third match. He beat Adam Page, then lost to him, then defeated him decisively. These have been two of the most successful wrestlers since AEW’s inception which makes this is a true number-one contenders match.
One question with this match is: When is the title shot? AEW has not stated outright if this match will take place on AEW Dynamite or AEW Revolution.
